New Patent Shows Apple Working on Bidirectional Wireless Charging Battery Cases

Since the removal of the headphone jack with the release of the iPhone 7, Apple has been working to make its mobile devices completely portless. Now, a recent patent suggests that the Cupertino-based tech giant is developing a new battery case with bidirectional wireless charging capability.

Now, to make this possible, the new battery case in question will come with two wireless charging coils with a “switching circuitry”.This will enable the charging case to pass the power it receives to the device it is attached to without the use of a physical connection.

Although, current Apple smart battery cases come with wireless charging capability, however,the presence of only one wireless charging coil allows the case to only charge itself wirelessly. To charge iPhones with the current battery cases, users still need to connect the cases to the iPhone via a lightning connector.

However, according to the patent,“a battery case has first and second coils on opposing sides of a battery and has switching circuitry that is coupled between the first and second coils,”. Andthis arrangement of the coils and the switching circuitry will enable the future battery cases from Apple to ditch the lightning connector.

This way, Apple’s future “smart” battery cases will be able to charge the device and itself wirelessly, unlike current“Smart” Battery cases.
