[Update: Official Statement] Huawei Slashes More Than 50% Workforce in India; Reduces Revenue Estimate

Jul. 30, 2020

According to sources quoted by ET,“Workforce in network support, field deployment, outsourcing and sales department is being impacted majorly as there are no new projects or any clarity on new business from telecom operators”. The report claims that the company’s networks division and consumer businesses have both seen massive layoffs. The only departments that have escaped largely unscathed are apparently the R&D and the Global Service Center.

While the UK has officially joined the US inbanning the use of Huawei equipmentin the country’s 5G network, New Delhi has been less overt in its approach on the issue. The government, however, has barred state-runBSNLand MTNL from sourcing equipment from Chinese telecom manufacturers like ZTE and Huawei. It has also reportedly ‘recommended’ that the private telcos replace all existing Chinese equipment in their networks over time.

Yesterday we reported that Huawei is laying off more than 50% of its staff in India. Huawei has since reached out to us and given an official statement regarding the report.

“We do not comment on market speculation. Reports suggesting layoffs of more than half of Huawei staff in India are untrue,”said the company in a statement. Further, it added“Huawei has been a part of Indian ICT ecosystem for the past 20 years focused on building a better connected India. We continue to work closely with all our customers in the country. Our India operations and resources, backed by robust local talent are designed to meet any customer requirements.”
